Medical Equipment for Health Centres
Putting medical equipment into health clinics has both an immediate AND a long-term impact.
Many villages in the Usambara Mountains have a health clinic staffed by one or two qualified nurses. Occasionally, a qualified doctor can also be found among the staff. They are invariably caring and kind to their patients.
However, they are often hampered in their caring efforts by a lack of medical equipment. When equipment such as a delivery bed, sterilizer, blood pressure and glucose monitor, wheelchair, sufficient hospital beds, and screens are needed, we are there to provide them. Here is a recent typical delivery invoice, giving a less than complete insight into the need.
One thousand to three thousand dollars per clinic is needed to adequately supply medical equipment to health clinics.
We have visited and equipped approximately 60 health clinics over the past three years, mainly in the Usambara Mountains, and we will continue to assess their needs every two years.
In mid-2024, we began to visit the many health clinics in Bagamoyo district, where we are now poised to begin delivering equipment to 21 clinics.
The need for this project in other districts is also obvious and will be part of our future efforts to improve health facilities for the local populations.
We are unable to provide everything requested. Some equipment is just too expensive, but we do provide the equipment we regard as having the greatest impact. The costs vary, of course, from clinic to clinic. But we can easily spend anywhere between one and six million shillings (AUS$1,000–$3,000) per clinic.
